Although people tend to believe that the previous generations had a much stronger religious upbringing, the reality is far from true. Chinuch in the early 19th century in Russia and Eastern Europe was especially challenging. The cantonist decrees and the ensuing effects they had on both Russia and Eastern Europe were devastating, and resulted in many Jewish children losing their connection to Yiddishkeit.
Today we are blessed to have thriving schools that provide children with a full education in both Jewish and secular subjects from preschool through high schools, which has never been the case previously in our history.
